Railways bridged the wide gap formed millions of year ago. The gorge is the major commercial route through the Cascades, and the tracks are a shining example of engineering. Mount Hood, Union Pacific, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe seem to connect in a magical way that was blasted out over raw country and are the viable railroads of today. Lots of black/white photos described with captions.
