The NP decided to bypass Butte, Montana, in favor of a main line through Helena 40 miles north. It appeared to be more lucrative and offered a lower crossing of the divide through the Mullan Tunnel. Three years later however, things changed when Butte began to be a copper mining center. In 1886 the NP began a struggle for ten years to find a route to Butte, first from Garrison, then from Helen and finally from Logan over Homestake Pass. The Butte Short Line is a history of that effort.
