The Northern Pacific dubbed itself the “Main Street of the Northwest” and it was. Both the Northwest and the railroad grew up together. As the first of five eventual transcontinental rail systems to serve the Pacific Northwest, the NP was the line to be the explorer, the innovator, and in some cases, the perpetrator of all that was railroading in the nineteenth century.
