This book covers “Transition Designs”…4-4-2 Atlantics and2-6-2 Prairies. Both improved both existing designs by adding wider fireboxes supported by 2-wheeled trailing trucks to the common passenger (4-4-0) and freight (2-6-0) locomotives of the 19th century, had brief periods of popular use, and were supplanted by larger classes (4-6-2) Pacifics and 2-8-2 Mikados) as trains became longer and heavier and locomotive technology advances. Black/White photos with descriptions.
